What's the motto?

Today is New Year's Eve.
Goodbye 2010.
Hello 2011.
We'll be spending New Year's Eve with our friends Kim and Nate (and their 3 month old beautiful baby Morgan) for a little get together.
2010 brought a lot of events and changes to my life.
I wonder what 2011 will bring.

I'm not one for making New Year's resolutions. I find it depressing because I know that I won't follow through on something that I make only because it's a new year and the thing to do. I do, however, come up with one word that I want to be my personal motto for the year. I like to "post" the word in my home where I'll see it often. The past two years my motto has been SIMPLIFY. I decided to have it two years in a row because it was exactly what I needed at the time. I felt like my life was getting junked up with unnecessary worries and I needed to "choose my battles" rather than tackle the world. I keep it posted on the dresser in our bedroom where I can see it often.

I've been thinking for the last past few weeks about this year's personal motto. I think I've decided on JOY. I want to be able to find joy in every aspect of my life and focus on that. I want to see joy in all that I have, and try not to get caught up in what I don't. Everyone's life lacks something somewhere. We're all human and have trials. I'm working on keeping that in perspective. I want to be able to find joy in the things to come as well. Sometimes life can seem unfair when something doesn't end up like we anticipated it would. But I am recognizing that there is still joy to be found in every situation. So, I guess my new quest is to find something that says or represents "JOY" that I can put our home to remind me of this year's motto. Oh good! Another reason to go shopping!!

Happy New Year!

Happy Birthday To Me!!

Yesterday was my birthday.
Yep.
36 years ago I graced this world with my presence. Ha ha!
It's nice for me to be in a career where I will always get to sleep in on my big day. And sleep in we did! The day started by sleeping in, followed by sitting around and being lazy. Ken and I went to lunch with my mom and got Mexican food at Mi Ranchito - my favorite local Mexican joint!

Then Ken went home and my mom and I ran to a few stores to check out any after Christmas clearance sales. I didn't find anything worthwhile, but I did buy a bunch of Rubbermaid totes with lids so I can organize our unorganized storage room downstairs. That's going to be a undertaking.

Ken and I went and saw the new-ish Harry Potter movie last night. We're a little behind the times in seeing new releases. We both liked it a lot!

Tank and Sascha (our dog and cat) got me a little something. They got me refill "graters" for my Ped-Egg (best invention ever) and a few Sudoku books.

Ken got me the Del Parsons print that I love.

I LOVE the expression on this little girl's face.

We originally decided we were going to hang the new picture in the bedroom but it just didn't look quite right in there. Instead we hung the picture in the hallway between our front room and t.v. room near the stairs. It looks GREAT there! I love it!

We took the Greg Olsen picture (a birthday present from Ken about 12 years ago, believe it or not) that was hanging in the hallway and moved it into our bedroom where a wreath had been hanging. I think the old picture looks great in the bedroom!

My mom and dad, and Ken's mom and dad both gave me a card with birthday money in it. I haven't decided what to buy yet, but I've got a few things in mind!
All in all, it was a pretty great day!

Christmas Wrap Up...

We had a fantastic first Christmas together!

We were fortunate enough to spend the evenings of the 24th, 25th, and 26th at the MTC in Provo. Ken was the organist for the firesides each of those nights. We were able to stay and listen to the beautiful musical numbers and speakers. It was very spiritual, and we feel blessed for Ken to have been invited to play on those evenings. We're praying that more opportunities will come up for us to be able to serve there.

While we were there on Christmas Eve, they had the missionaries sing the MTC's version of the 12 Days of Christmas. They posted the words on the big screens and assigned different parts of the room to sing about the different days. It went a little something like this...

On the 1st day of Christmas my MTC gave me...
a rock solid testimony.

On the 2nd day of Christmas my MTC gave me...
2 haircuts free and a rock solid testimony.

It continued on and on...

12 (neither Ken or I can remember)
11 loads of laundry
10 new commandments
9 vaccinations
8 hours of classes
7 lukewarm showers
6 thirty wake up
5 hours of gym
4 chocolate milks
3 new companions
2 haircuts free
and a rock solid testimony.

Ken played while they sang and it was obvious the Elders and Sisters were having a great time!

On Christmas Day, there was a 2 man production of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol. It was really interesting and enjoyable.

Elder Russell M. Nelson spoke briefly after the play.

Each night we were there, the messages were very uplifting. The message on the 26th was all about companionship - mainly as full time missionaries. But Ken and I were both able to apply it to ourselves as eternal companions with each other. It made me grateful for for him.

On Christmas morning, we began the festivities!
Here's our front room before...

and here's the aftermath - after it was cleaned up a little bit.

We went a little overboard this year and bought ourselves a little more than we probably needed. Both Ken's parents and my parent's gave us money for Christmas. We combined it all and put it toward some things we wanted. We bought a new upright freezer we put in the garage. This way, I can shop sales or shop at Costco a little more often and not worry about where all of the frozen stuff will go.

We also bought a Shark Steamer. Ken was super excited about it and has already cleaned the floor three times in two days. And as I'm typing this, he's downstairs cleaning the hardwood in his office and the downstairs bathroom tile. Trust me... I'm not complaining about this!!

We also splurged and got ourselves a Bose speaker system for our t.v.
And since I'm married to a person who prides himself on his collection of DVD's, we added these to our private media arsenal.

We didn't forget the animals either.
Tank got several toys that he became instantly possessive about.

Tank instantly took his new toy under the bed where no one could get to it.

Look at his mouth below. He's ready to bite if anyone thinks about touching his toy.

And we gave Sascha her first cat-nip experience. She was in love! From what we could tell, she was stoned out of her mind and very, very happy about it.

My Christmas from Ken.
We had agreed to not buy candy for each other, but he said he needed it to hid the gift cards in. Whatever. I'm not complaining because he loaded me up with chocolate covered pretzels... my favorite!

On the left is Heel-Tastic. That stuff is AMAZING! I have the worst dry feet on the planet. They crack open and bleed year round. It's gross. Heel-Tastic is working miracles, I tell you. Take note too that the York Peppermint Sandwich Pretzels on the right side are already opened. I waste no time with important matters.

Yep. Ken got me "as seen on t.v.'s" Ped Egg. Also AMAZING! Combined with Heel-Tastic, my feet are transformed and no longer snag on the carpet. Ha ha!

My favorite perfume AND lotion that I ran out of a while ago and am too cheap to go buy myself. My very favorite Ralph. Ken's got a good sniffer to have remembered the smell to choose it. I was thrilled to get it, and the biggest bottle too!

Piles on the floor. Ken's on the left and mine on the right.

Ken's Christmas from me.
Ken got a lovely assortment of Axe stuff. He wears it all of the time and these sets were one heck of a deal. He should be set for a while. I didn't include photos of all of the Axe boxes.

Sascha was in on the Axe theme too. She got him this.

Tank thought Ken might like a gum ball machine for his office downstairs.

I also got him a can of Spiff-E-Whip. We joke about it all of the time. It's basically Cool-Whip powder for your long term food storage. Hilarious! Ken is the proud owner of his own can.

But what Ken REALLY wanted was an iTouch. I had spent the last few days before Christmas convincing him that he wasn't getting one. I reminded him that they're expensive and we had already spent a lot of money. I told him that he was hurting my feelings by continuing to mention getting one because I didn't get it for him. I think I had him mostly convinced. I had already gone to great lengths to get him one and wanted to keep it a surprise as long as I could. I bought him some shirts at Old Navy and tucked the iTouch inside on the clothes so when he opened it he couldn't see it. He opened that present last and actually told me later he was a little sad it wasn't an iTouch. But when lifted the shirts up, all of this fell out...

And why did he want an iTouch so badly?
Two words.

Evidently, he's become somewhat self-admittedly obsessed with the Angry Birds game.

I could post a hundred more pictures just like it but I won't embarrass him.
This is the man who cannot get out of bed in the morning to save his life, but he was up at 8:30 a.m. to play Angry Birds. I love it!

We had my mom and dad over for brunch on Christmas morning and had a nice visit with Ken's parents on the phone. All in all, Ken and I both agree it was the best Christmas ever!

Merry Christmas...

My mom has this picture at her house and I love it!

Merry Christmas to all of our family, friends, and blog stalkers.

May we all remember the reason for the Christmas season.
The birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Ken did an organ recital for his old ward at the beginning of the month. He asked me to write something to go along with his music. This is a piece of what I wrote and read for his recital.

"And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cæsar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; to be taxed with Mary, his espoused wife, being great with child.

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And as we know, the baby was born in a lowly estate, where oxen and cattle were feeding.

What child is this whose humble birth caused an angel to appear to the shepherds while they were in the fields watching their flocks that night telling them “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.” For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.”

What child is this whose divine earthly purpose had long been foretold by wise prophets and heavenly angels?

What child is this who was born on a holy night and peacefully slept while angels sang heavenly anthems for the waiting shepherds - as a bright star lead the Wiseman to their King?

This child brings with Him hope; for the weary world is now able to rejoice at His arrival.

This child brings with Him salvation and redemption. His earthly mission will be a perfect one of teaching patience, forgiveness, peace and love. He will heal the sick, raise the dead and atone for our sins and open the door for us to return to live with our Father. He will be an example in all he does. Long after His crucifixion, the world will continue to celebrate His life.

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

What child is this?

This child is the King of Kings. He is Jesus the Christ, the Son of God. He is the light of the world. He is our Lord, our Redeemer, our Savior, our brother and our friend."

Merry Christmas!

Parties and such...

We've been having a lot of rain here in Utah the past few days. The news has been forecasting that we wouldn't have a white Christmas, just a wet one. Which on one hand is good... you don't have to shovel rain. But, yesterday morning we woke up to this...

It took me about an hour to shovel the driveway and sidewalks - Ken was at work.
So much for accurate weather forecasting!

Yesterday was our annual Chidester family Christmas party. It's been a long standing tradition since I was tiny. We get together, eat more than anyone should, and hope that Santa comes. He's never let us down yet!

My mom is the QUEEN of too much food!

My nephew Jake told Santa last night that he wanted a Thomas the Train. When Santa gave Jake his present, it just so happened to be Thomas. You've never seen a more excited and amazed child!

My brother Clint and his wife Martha gave us a 6 foot folding table and chairs... something I'd "hinted" to Martha we wanted. Well, the new table just happens to be the same width and height as our dining table. It was perfect! It makes seating for 8.

This afternoon, I had the teachers that I taught with last year over for a little Christmas get together. We've all moved on in different ways and no longer teach together. Kim, Allison, and Lindsey have all had babies and are stay-at-home moms, I got married, and Peggy and Marianne moved to new schools. Allison was visiting from Arizona (where she moved to at the end of the last school year) so we used it as an excuse to meet up. Everyone brought food and treats. It was so good to see everyone!

The new, EXTRA LONG table!

Marianne, Lindsey and Allison.

Jacquie (who I am fortunate to still teach with) and Allison's baby, the handsome Mr. "B".

Our bedroom doubled as the baby nap room. Mr. "B" is on the floor and Miss "M" is on the bed.

Three babies require a lot of junk!

Allison, Peggy, Marianne and Kim.

All of us just hanging around, visiting, and cuddling with the babies.

Lindsey and Mr. "P", Allison and Mr. "B", and Kim with "Miss M".
